Civil War

"If this country cannot be save without giving up the principle . . . (of the Declaration of Independence), I
would rather be assassinated on
this spot than surrender it.
"

United States
Involvement in the Civil War

Dates: 1861 - 1865

" In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He was the candidate of the Republican Party, which opposed slavery. The southern states therefore withdrew from the Union. Lincoln’s government declared that they had no right to do so, and the result was civil war (1861-1865)

The North had more men, money and machines and an established government. It also controlled the sea and so could prevent aid reaching the South from other countries. Although the Southerners, or Confederates, fought with great determination, they were defeated and surrendered in April 1865. Five days later Lincoln was assassinated. With the Emancipations Proclamation in 1863, Lincoln had made slavery, the immediate cause of the war, illegal and the victory of the Union (the North) ensured that the USA remained a single nation."
